Caution During Chemo!

Attention all men and women undergoing Chemotherapy.

1) Caution: Call your doctor if your cuticles become red and painful or show other changes.

Minor nail problems are common side effects of chemotherapy. These side effects occur because the treatment affects normal cells as well as cancer cells. To manage these side effects, try the tips on this handout.

Nail Changes
Nail problems tend to be minor. In most cases, you can take care of them yourself. Don't be surprised if your nails become:

Darkened
Brittle
Cracked
Marked with vertical lines or bands
Detached from the skin What You Can Do

If nail problems occur, be patient. Damaged nails can be repaired only with new growth, which is slow. Fingernails grow about 1/8 inch a month. Toenails grow about 1/24 inch a month. Until your nails grow back:

Keep them short and filed to show new growth. Be careful when cutting around cuticles.
Talk to your health care provider before using nail strengtheners or seeing a manicurist.
Reduce the risk of infection. Wear gloves when washing dishes, gardening, or performing other work around the house. Be careful when you cut your nails and cuticles.
To help prevent nails from peeling, drink plenty of fluids. 1)

2) Many women are surprised to learn that chemotherapy may have an effect on their nails during treatment. Both fingernails and toenails can become brittle, dry, discolored, develop lines or ridges, and may even fall off.

Nail damage is a common side of chemotherapy drugs belonging to the taxmen group. For women being treated with chemotherapy for cervical cancer, this would mean drugs like docetaxel and paclitaxel. Taxanes work by inhibiting the growth of tumors.

How to Reduce Nail Damage
There are many things a woman/men can do to help reduce nail damage and keep nails healthy during treatment:

· Wear rubber gloves. When doing indoor chores like dish washing or cleaning with household cleansers, always use rubber gloves. During chemotherapy, the cuticles often become dry; household cleansers can aggravate the condition and may cause burning to sensitive cuticles. Wearing rubber gloves will protect hands from these potentially irritating cleansers. Rubber gloves are also important when doing outdoor chores like gardening and yard work.

· Avoid cosmetic nail treatments. When nails don't look their best, it is tempting to go to a manicurist for acrylic nails or nail wraps. The space behind the acrylic nails and wraps are often spaces that harbor and trap bacteria, leading to an infection. It is best to avoid the temptation and wait until chemotherapy treatment is over before having cosmetic nail treatments.

If nails are not cracking or broken, nail polish can be worn. Many women use nail polish to mask nail discoloration's, lines, and ridges. Some women find that nail polish may even strengthen the nail. helping to reduce nail breakage. Remember to use a non-acetone polish remover, as acetone is sometimes harsh on fragile nails.

· Care for your cuticles. Cuticles can become dry and ragged during chemotherapy. Use a moisturizing cuticle cream regularly to prevent dryness. It also recommended to use a cuticle remover to remove dry cuticles, as opposed to pulling, cutting, or tearing them off. Cuticles that are painful or inflamed should be reported to a doctor.

· Keep nails cool during chemotherapy sessions. Studies show that keeping the nails cool during chemotherapy sessions can help to reduce damage. By keeping the nail areas colder than that rest of the body, the chemotherapy drugs do not reach the nails as easily and will not cause as much cell damage. This type of treatment is called cryotherapy.

In clinical trials for nail damage, cryotherapy was done using a special frozen glove. Cryotherapy to prevent nail damage during chemotherapy has not yet been approved by the FDA, so it is common to see women dipping their fingers in ice water or even keeping frozen vegetable bags on their hands during treatment.

Funny Stuff

Having a little funny with urban dictionary, 3 grade English writing practices and words that have to do with "toe" read this paragraph and check out the funny definitions from Urbandictionary.com!

Using my tonar I ask this chick where she got her nails done.  She said @ MPC on Pier Ave.  OMG!  I went on Saturday and they made suggestions for my polish color based on my toetoo…they even removed all my toe-jam!  Their pedicures make my toenails so supple; they even waxed my toehair!  These little piggies can't wait to go back to MPC!

Little Piggys/Toes -
Ugly things attached to your feet that you always end up stubbing forcing you to swear like a drunken sailor.
Example: OMG!  I #2@23@%^#^# my *^%*&** toe!
Toenails-
Hardened discs on the tips of the toes that protect the toe. Females like to paint their toenails all different colors. Toe-covers
Example:20Samantha painted her toenails with OPI's "Not really a waitress."

Toe-jam –
Toe-cheese
Example: Tiffany: "What is that cottage cheese like substance between your toes?"
Samantha: "Oh, that's my toe-jam! Want some?"

Toe-hair-
Long luscious hair protruding from the big toe of=2 0one's foot.
Example: Kara your toe hair is so soft and luscious like a Donald Trump hair piece.

Toetoo
noun: a tattoo on your toe. Therefore, a toe too.
Example: ehmagawd! Look at her radical toetoo!

Toenar-
The ability to scout malls for females wearing open toed shoes with pretty feet
Example: Dude, did you see her feet? Beautiful! Thank god the toenar is working

UGH!

So, as I was sitting outside having lunch in Manhattan Beach next to the local $20 mani/pedi all you can cut plus free fungus nail salon, I noticed a lady entering the salon with a clear zip lock bag full of her own implements.  First of all...Why would you go to a salon where you had to bring your own supplies?  Second, that little bag you're carrying is probably full of bacteria.  If you don't sanitize and/or completely dry off your tools after every use, while resting in that sealed bag, bacteria is growing by the millions.  At MPC we won't do a service on you unless we use our own implements and here's why:

1.  After every use we (MPC) scrub each implement with soap and water.
2.  We then soak them in barbicide for 10 minutes and rinse them off with warm water.
3.  We then get a Q-tip soaked in acetone and get into every nook and cranny to make                sure there's no rust, etc.
5.  Finally we autoclave the implements, dry them completely and then seal them in a sterilized pouch.

For Our Foot Basin:
1.  After every use, we scrub them with soap and water.
2.  Then we soak each tub in barbicide for 10 minutes.
3.  At night (here's the non "eco-friendly" thing we do) we soak each tub in bleach:(
4.  We built our drains 4 feet underground so even if there was something we missed...it's not coming back to you through the "massage" jets like other salons.

Oh, and we wash our hand before each client and between your pedi and a mani or mani and a pedi.

So Please, if you're trying to save money and think you're being safe by bringing your own supplies, think again...Fungus and infections while pampering yourself or for any other reason, JUST ISN'T WORTH IT!

Standing Appointments Ladies

It's time to make appointments ladies (and gents).  MPC loves the idea of never turning anyone away, but unfortunately our clients have learned to call ahead and book up our days.  In a recent yelp blog a client was rightfully upset that she drove such a long distance to get "turned away."   We are very very sorry about that and hope you come back and visit us soon, but we've reached the point where you might need to call first!

Sure we can rush your appointment, shorten your massage and not clean the tub properly (we'd be happy to recommend places that will do that for you), but we refuse. Often our Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays have been booked solid turning 20-30 clients away a day!  Call ahead and then book your standing appointment...it's the new "in" thing.

BTW: Don't look at your manicurist toes because we can't even get in at MPC!

Sushi anyone?

The thought of $0.99 rolls at *Day Ol Sushi sounds about as good as that $6.00 manicure down the street.  Not sure if there is a salon down the street offering a $6.00 manicure, but some things you pay a little extra for to save on medical bills.  You pay a little more for sushi so you aren't hugging the porcelain bus all night.  You pay a little more for your manicure so you don't have to cover up fungus for the rest of your life.

According to Medical News Today, "Nail fungus is a common infection that affects more than 2.5 million Americans annually.  The most common way that nail fungus is spread is by using utensils that haven't been properly sterilized. One California salon spread infection through more than 110 of their clients. The sources were spa chairs that hadn't been properly cleaned. This company wasn't thoroughly cleaning out the bowls on their spa chairs; as a result, microorganisms were growing inside the filters."

Here at Mani Pedi Cutie we double sanitize our implements.  First in Quats (Quaternary ammonium compound) then in a medical grade sterilizer, the Autoclave!   We invite you to visit our prep-station, ask to see the autoclave, check our files, and walk bare-foot on our floor, go ahead, I dare you!

Mani Pedi Cutie is here to provide the best service, polish, massage, atmosphere and the most sanitary environment possible.  Let us know if we're not providing that for you at any time!

You pay for sanitation, conversation (eh hum....), the convenient location, and quality.

Anyone for sushi?

*not actual name of sushi resturant

Toe-hair be gone!

Picture this: You get off work, open a bottle of wine and your man is rubbing your deliciously soft manicured feet in front of the fireplace on the (faux) bearskin rug, but stops because he gets caught in your 2 inch long natted toe hair!  Nasty!  Why is the trendiest girls with the most expensive bags have standing appointments to take care of their toenails, but they don't shave/wax their TOE HAIR!!!!!!!!!!  Weird, you say?  Gross?  Try being that close to it!

Put your toe-hair combs away!  Next time your in MPC do your toes a favor and get your TOE HAIR waxed by Jenny!  Promise, you'll love it, and so will your man.

Our Green Team

A client of mine just asked, "how do you maintain a green philosophy?" Easy. We started with the foundation of our business, literally and figuratively.

Before Mani Pedi Cutie was built, a number of considerations were at play. Besides creating a warm, friendly, and relaxing atmosphere, we wanted stay within our own concept of being green. Green to us is peace of mind, reminding us daily of the places we live, work, and breathe in.

Together, Ally Conley of MPC + Rachel Winokur, of eTTa designs [www.ettadesigns.com], made sure the MPC salon was built on a green foundation.

"During the demolition phase of MPC, as much as possible was sent for re-use and proper recycling, including proper disposal of fluorescent bulbs. Sustainable efforts included low-flow plumbing, high-efficiency faucets, tankless water heaters, 14 SEER HVAC (above minimum 13 required), fluorescents, dimmers/occupancy sensors/timers, high-efficiency exhaust fans to maintain clean air quality, and energy star appliances. Materials used contain recycled, sustainable and/or non-toxic content as much as possible including, recycled fabrics, recycled aluminum and glass tiles, responsibly manufactured quartz countertops, recycled metal wall framing, recycled insulation, low VOC paints, water-based finishes and adhesives like Nanocoating to seal the millwork, and eco-friendly cleaning products."

All of our products used on services are organic. Our nail polishes are free of toxic Toluene, Formaldehyde and DBP free. We only do natural nails; no smelly acrylics. We recycle + carpool. If you drive an eco-friendly car, you get a free scrub with your MPC mani/pedi purchase.

Green. It's the new black.

MPC is an eco-friendly nail salon

In a recent green article on www.greenyour.com, MPC was featured as one of six eco-friendly nail salons in the US to visit. To read more of the story, go here: http://www.greenyour.com/node/9921.

"It's always open-toed shoe season in sunny Southern California, so whether you're a local or just visiting, stop by Hermosa Beach's Mani Pedi Cutie! and treat those little piggies (and hands) to one of their eco-elegant treatments."

We thank them for including us in their feature.
